Houseboats Midi – Holidays on the water

“The Canal du Midi shimmers in all its brilliance, nature is shrouded in a red-golden veil and even the cities and villages are showing their most attractive sides, in particular when it comes to food. Take a detour to the Narbonne and sample some of the freshly harvested grapes in the covered market.”

Karen Whitehouse, Front Office Responsible

See the south of France from its most attractive side on the historic waterway of the Canal du Midi (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site). The journey takes you through a unique landscape, passing by dreamy villages and small wineries. You also enjoy lots of comfort on board the houseboat. The Hapimag houseboats are a means of transport and cosy home in one, with sufficient space for all the family.

Enjoy the slower pace of life under the sun of the south and the freedom to stay or move on as you desire. That's what holidays on houseboats are all about. The starting point of the trip is in the south of France, roughly an hour's drive south-west of Montpellier. Here you will be the captain within just a short space of time. The houseboat glides along at a leisurely pace through the picturesque countryside, which has retained its special charm over the centuries. The canals are often bordered by trees, while the Pyrenees soar above in the background. Decide on a whim where you would like to spend the day. Explore the region on foot or by bicycle (brought on the boat). In the small alleyways of medieval Carcassonne, a former Cathar walled city, which is now a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, there are bistros with the proverbial French charm. Simple country inns and numerous weekly markets along the waterway take care of the culinary side of things. Typical for the Canal du Midi: Oysters and mussels or the regional speciality Cassoulet, a stew of white beans, bacon and sausages. At the market there is fruit, spicy cheese and fresh baguettes. Throw in a bottle of Merlot or Saint Chinian and then enjoy the sunset on deck. Steer around the next bend in the canal and be fascinated by the chirping of the cicadas. The atmosphere is indescribably idyllic. The comfortably furnished boats ensure you feel at home on holiday on the Hapimag Houseboats Midi. The boats undergo a maintenance check before every departure. Before you set off you receive detailed instructions and go on a test run with expert support. You do not need a boating licence!

Take the helm

Drift leisurely on the water and go on the occasional journey of discovery on land. As a houseboat captain on the Canal du Midi, you are in charge of setting the tempo and the number of stops – even for trips as short as three days (upon request). Take the helm and for a short time exchange the terra firma for the floating sun deck. Ship ahoy!
