Photography with marmots – up close and personal

The region around Sonnleitn fascinates photographers and nature lovers in equal measure, making it the perfect location for a wildlife photography workshop focusing on marmots. With tips and tricks from professional photographer Heinz Hudelist, you’ll learn how to apply both tried-and-tested and creative new photography techniques in practice. The highlight of the workshop is the close level of support provided: with no more than two other participants at any one time, you’ll benefit from real personal mentoring.

Exclusive wild marmot photography with photographer Heinz Hudelist

Programme

Sonnleitn is the departure point for this exclusive wildlife photography workshop. We start in the afternoon with an introduction to wildlife photography and a discussion about camera technique. We then make our way to our intended spot, an Alpine meadow, where we photograph marmots until the dusk comes.

The main focus of the workshop is on sharing tips and tricks relating to photography. Heinz Hudelist will advise and assist you in composing your shots, identifying themes and applying techniques. With a maximum of three guests, the workshop guarantees exclusive guidance throughout the photography experience. As marmots are wild animals, no guarantees can be made on whether or how long they will be willing to pose for photographs. However, the Sonnleitn area is perfect for photographing marmots and has been extensively tested to ensure its suitability for photography in general.

Services included

  • All-day photography workshop with exclusive support
  • Theory and discussion of images on the subject of wildlife photography

Children's nature camp

Austria’s mountains, flora and fauna and untamed nature are calling out to you! A whole week of adventure and fun await at the natural science kids camp. Animals, plants, mountains and alpine pastures are all just waiting to be explored with the help of the Austrian nature reserve’s ranger and forest education specialist Nicole Mittendorfer. The young researchers will be not only learn lots of new things, but also be awarded your very own researcher’s certificate!

Natural science kids camp in Sonnleitn in the Carnic Alps

Programme

At the natural science camp, everyone has the chance to be a real natural scientist. The resort in Sonnleitn is the starting point for the various activities. With Mission Green Planet as our theme, we will discover and investigate our environment together.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Sonnleitn. At 17.00, the budding researchers and parents will be welcomed over a refreshing drink and given further details about the week’s events. As the programme comprises outdoor events, it is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Day 2: The week will start on the alpine pastures. Together we will investigate the universe in a cowpat and get to know farmers on the alpine pastures. At lunchtime, we will enjoy delicious fresh alpine snacks. Recharged and reinvigorated, we will visit the marmots in their natural habitat in the afternoon.

Day 3: In the morning, our discussion topic will be "Miracle Waterworld". We will be investigating a mountain stream using a tray and research survey. Tonight's event is arguably the highlight of the week: the night walk. The group will prowl through the night, silent as a fox, seeing, hearing and smelling nature in a very different way.

Day 4: Today, we will be on the lookout for tracks. What can we see if a lynx, bear or wolf has crossed this path before us? Where do they live? Together we will determine their habitats. But nature offers more than just a place for animals to live. We will create little artworks using materials collected in the wild.

Day 5: This week also holds in store some great fun and games. In the afternoon, we will play games in the forest and learn some thrilling sensory exercises. Through these games, we will learn more about all that nature has to offer.

Day 6: The last day also promises to be a great hit with the children: A visit to the Garnitzenklamm canyon. Together we will explore this natural monument, building dams and cairns out of stones, known as “Stoamandeln” in this region. A tasty picnic will also be provided. To mark the end of the natural science camp, the trained naturalists will be awarded their own research certificate.

Day 7: Option to extend stay or make your own way home.

The natural science camp can be booked for children between the ages of 7 and 11 years and is suitable for all children who love nature and take pleasure in discovery and research. Nature skills are fostered together as a group.

Born to bike and hike

Sonnleitn is located in the Southern Limestone Alps and is therefore the perfect starting point for motorcycle tours and hikes. We will embark on various tours in the surrounding area together with our “alpine sheriff” Karl-Heinz Miggitsch, a trained motorcycle and mountain guide. The beautiful Alps with picturesque lakes, castles and gorges are just waiting to be discovered on foot and two wheels.

Varied week in Sonnleitn that cleverly combines motorcycling and hiking to make every biker's dream a reality

Programme

Day 1: Group dinner in the Almstüberl restaurant and introduction to the motorcycling and hiking programme by Karl-Heinz Miggitsch.

Day 2: First group outing together. A relatively easy starter tour along the Slovenian Vrsic Pass to warm up for the days ahead. (Approx. 5 hours; 180 km).

Day 3: Motorcycle tour to Lago di Sauris with tour of the highest altitude prosciutto company in Italy. We will stop for a break at Stefano (food not included). Via the Monte Zoncolan and Plöcken Pass, we will make our way back to Sonnleitn. (Approx. 6 hours; 220 km).

Day 4: On this easy to medium-hard hiking tour over the Madritsche to the Rudnig alpine pasture, we will discover the Carnic mountain region, visiting a show dairy on the way. These alpine pastures are famous for their delicious Gailtal cheese. (Hiking time approx. 5 hours).

Day 5: A wonderful motorcycle tour will take us through the Slovenian Triglav National Park and past roaring waterfalls. At 2864 m, Triglav is the highest mountain in both Slovenia and the Julian Alps. We will return to Sonnleitn via the Nassfeld Pass. (Approx. 6 hours; 260 km).

Day 6: Hike up the local peak in Nassfeld, the Gartnerkofel. From the top, we will be afforded wonderful panoramic views over the Julian Alps, the Dolomites and the High Tauern mountain ranges. (Hiking time approx. 5 hours)
