Athens – The modern age and ancient times in perfect harmony

We explore the historic core of Athens on foot. Everywhere we go, we find evidence of an eventful past: historic rows of houses, ancient archaeological excavations and ruins. At the same time, we experience the bustle of activity of a dynamic 21st century metropolis. We witness a combination of past and present on a short underground train journey. An archaeological tour including excavated treasure awaits us at one of the most modern underground stations.

Different parts of town

We buy fresh fruit, vegetables and Greek specialities at authentic weekly markets frequented by many of the locals in different parts of the city – the Athenians have a close connection with their neighbourhoods. Or we make some chic purchases in Koloniaki, an upmarket neighbourhood offering elegant boutiques, suave bars and cafés. It is also worth stopping off at the parliament building on the hour to witness the changing of the guards ceremony. We learn about the eventful history of Greece and its capital city in numerous museums. The reception provides us with information on other sights worth seeing in Athens.
