Who or what can save the world?

19.03.2010 / Can responsible consumers, ethical consumption or sustainable lifestyles save the world? What is the ecological attitude of the individual worth? What political parameters does a commitment to sustainability demand?

The Quality of Life and Sustainability Forum, held this year in Germany for the second time, and initiated by Hapimag, was devoted to the areas of conflict between the desire for a better quality of life and efforts aimed at sustainable development. On 11th March 2010 at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, six speakers from Germany and Switzerland discussed various economic, political, scientific and religious views on the compatibility of lifestyle quality and sustainability. Around 100 representatives from the fields of economics, environmental protection and nature conservation, politics, science and the media took part in the event.

For more and more people, what counts is not so much ownership of property and goods, but the possibility of access to them at any time. This observation was made by German future researcher Eike Wenzel, who talked about the change of values among consumers and revealed the trends towards new "Sinnmärkte" (personal and spiritual affirmation markets), sustainability and the growth of personal values.

It is precisely this development that forms the basis for the sustainable business models of two current examples from industry. "Use instead of ownership" is the maxim both of Mobility CarSharing and Hapimag AG. Kurt Scholl, CEO of Hapimag, expressed his conviction that an intelligent lifestyle that combines quality of life and sustainability was practicable in business terms and did not represent a conflict of aims. The Hapimag system was an economically and ecologically sensible alternative to the traditional second or holiday home. The concentrated usage of the facilities and all-year-round high level of occupancy at the 56 addresses in Europe were also compatible with the aspects of sustainability at the various locations, in complete contrast with destinations where large numbers of apartments remained unoccupied for long periods of the year, thus achieving a poor economic and ecological "balance sheet".

A similarly sustainable economic concept is pursued by the highly successful company Mobility CarSharing which, through clever combination of the various public and private local and long-distance transport options, has made the idea of the "public car" a reality. Its business model, explained Giatgen Peder Fontana, President of the Board of Directors of Mobility CarSharing, had resulted in substantial CO2 savings and a change in transport usage patterns in Switzerland.
The representative of the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany), church councillor Ruth Gütter, called for an acceptance of the ethics of ‘sufficiency’ and a willingness to "abstain" in order to preserve creation. She reflected the viewpoint of the Church in the sustainability discussion as documented in the most recent EKD memorandum "Turning Back to Life – Sustainable Development in the Age of Climate Change".

In the arguable view of Oliver Geden (Science and Politics Foundation, Berlin) the future of the global climate would not be decided at the supermarket checkout but in the parliaments and at the international negotiating tables. If individuals wanted to have an influence, then they should not see themselves primarily as consumers but become involved as citizens.
The annual forum is an initiative of the Europe-wide operator Hapimag AG of Baar, Switzerland. It is intended to provide a public discussion platform for topical sustainability issues in the context of quality of life and the creation of individual lifestyles.
