Discovering the Côte d’Azur together – and experiencing exclusivity
09.02.2010 / Discovering southern France on a seven-day guided tour and visiting the Monte Carlo Circus Festival together. Around 25 Hapimag members toured the Côte d’Azur in mid-January with Tandem Tours.
Escaping from everyday reality and discovering new experiences. Antibes, Nice, St. Tropez, Monaco and Grasse were just a few of the highlights of the Tandem Tours trip from 16 to 23 January. But everyone was agreed that the absolute pinnacle was the Circus Festival in Monaco. "When we read that the trip included a visit to the Circus Festival, we signed up straight away," Hapimag member Herbert Freikamp said. The Monte Carlo International Circus Festival is one of the largest and most famous of its kind. Every year at the beginning of January, the best artistes from around the world compete for the Oscar of the circus world, the "Golden Clown". Although it wasn't awarded on that particular evening, the members were highly impressed by the attractions. After a good four hours' entertainment, the trippers left the big top with a smile, enthusing animatedly about the artistes, lion-tamers and clowns. "I haven't laughed as loud for a long time," said Barbara Alt, a member from Germany, recalling the antics of the various clowns.

Exploring the azure coast
But it wasn't just the circus visit that delighted the Tandem Tours trippers. They enjoyed the rest of the itinerary too. "We are finding out lots of interesting things about the country and its people that we would never have known otherwise," recount Wiltrud and Horst Weber, Hapimag members for 20 years.
While temperatures in Germany and Switzerland had dropped to double figures below zero, the Tandem Tours travellers were enjoying sunshine and a pleasant 15 degrees of warmth in the south of France. The sun competed with the beaming faces of the members and the atmosphere on the various excursions was always relaxed and friendly. "The tour guide is great, the itinerary interesting and the trip very well organised," was how member Margarete Schwarz summed up the Tandem Tours holiday.

Simple enjoyment
"Not having to worry about anything, not having to drive yourself, discovering the region and its history, and even visiting the Circus Festival," that was Peter Stelter's well-satisfied summary of the Tandem Tours trip.
Someone else who enjoys group travel is Marliese Rügner, the only member who travelled without a partner. Her husband is unable to accompany her for health reasons. But she never felt alone on the Tandem Tours holiday. "For me this is a very special experience and I enjoy travelling with other people," Rügner relates. That is because the members get to know each other during the collective excursions and meals, exchanging advice and recounting tales of other trips or home.
As the tour approaches its conclusion, some are already thinking about their next destination. Prague or Marrakech, a weekend in Budapest with a visit to the opera, or hiking in Spain – there is still a vast amount to discover.
