Capestang – Culture and idyll

The starting point for our tour along the waterways of southern France is Capestang. We continue down the Canal du Midi under small arched bridges, traverse locks and ask the friendly lock keepers for excursion tips. Shady sycamores line the banks of the canal. In Trèbes we visit the Gothic church of Saint-Etienne, dating from the late 13th century, and savour the taste of foie gras. We continue inland along the Canal du Midi and arrive at the ancient fortified town of Carcassonne with its massive ramparts. We wander down picturesque alleyways and take in the 52 towers, 2 curtain walls and 3 km of city walls that make up this medieval city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another route takes us from Capestang, past Béziers, toward the Mediterranean.
